Backup and disaster recovery for Oracle environments

Oracle Database recovery starts with RMAN. The Linux hosts, configuration, and backup files around the database need protecting too. InfoSapient manages both layers, keeps copies away from production, and plans recovery before it is needed.

Two layers of protection for Oracle environments Oracle RMAN backs up the database. Managed file-level backups protect the Oracle Linux hosts, including the files RMAN writes to them. Both go to backup storage kept apart from production, encrypted and immutable where the storage supports it. Recovery follows a planned order: hosts, database, application. RMAN protects the database and managed backups protect the hosts around it. Both write to storage kept apart from production.

Database and hosts

Two layers of protection

Each layer covers what the other can’t, so the database and the servers it runs on can both be brought back.

  • The database: Oracle RMAN

Application-consistent database backups and point-in-time recovery, run and monitored by our database engineers.

  • The hosts: managed Linux backup

File-level backups of the Oracle Linux servers and supporting Linux infrastructure: operating system configuration, Oracle and E-Business Suite file systems, scripts, and the files RMAN produces.

A file-level backup of a running database server is not, on its own, a usable copy of Oracle Database or E-Business Suite. Database recovery relies on RMAN. Host backups protect everything around the database and keep RMAN’s output on separate storage.

Oracle Linux backup

Managed backup for Oracle Linux servers

InfoSapient runs backups of the Oracle Linux servers and supporting Linux infrastructure as a managed service, from scheduling to the restore.

Backups

Scheduled, retained, and protected the same way on every server.

  • Automated backups on daily, weekly, or monthly schedules
  • Retention policies set per server
  • Encrypted backup data, with restricted access to backup administration
  • Immutable copies on object storage that supports object locking

Checks and recovery

Watched after every run, and ready when a restore is needed.

  • Consistency checks on stored backups
  • Job results monitored after every run, with failures followed up
  • Restores of individual files, folders, or complete file systems
  • Backup schedules aligned with RMAN, so database backup files reach separate storage

Ransomware

Preparing for ransomware recovery

Recovery depends on copies an attacker cannot change and a restore order set in advance.

Immutable copies

Copies an attacker can’t change

Immutable copies wherever the storage supports them, so backups survive an attack on production.

Credentials

Kept apart from production

Backup storage credentials are kept separate from production systems, so one compromise doesn’t reach both.

Recovery order

Worked out in advance

A recovery order documented for each environment: hosts, then database, then application tier.

Testing

Restores that are tested

Test restores, scheduled as agreed with each client.

Disaster recovery

Disaster recovery for Oracle Database and E-Business Suite

Each environment gets a disaster recovery plan built around the recovery point and recovery time the business needs.

The plan covers every tier of E-Business Suite, the database, and the hosts beneath them, using standby databases and replication to a second site or to OCI where the design calls for them.

  • Recovery point
  • Recovery time
  • Application tier
  • Database
  • Hosts
  • Second site or OCI

Operations

Part of the managed service

Backup failures and security alerts reach the same operational workflow as every other infrastructure incident.

Backups are planned alongside Oracle Linux administration, patching, and security monitoring, so they keep up as systems change.
